Note that the Bible Study Outline topics are not in alphabetical order like an index.

The Bible Study Outline is in a logical and historical outline.

Why not organize Bible Studies in alphabetical order?   Because it's just crazy to do it that way.

The Bible describes factual historical events, how to be born again into eternal life, and what the final conditions will be in the kingdom of God.

Much of the Bible is written as historical narrative or even conversation.  In the big-picture, the Bible is a story.  People remember story accounts of facts far better than isolated facts.  More...

You are Studying the Bible - Study, Study, Study.

Let's say you have been reading Matthew chapter 6 on the Lord's prayer.

So, you want to keep those notes about prayer someplace so that when you come across another prayer, you can add it to the same place for easy reference.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, because all scripture is consistent with and should be interpreted in the context of all other scripture.

Comments on the Lord's Prayer

In your study, you learn that the historical setting of the prayer was the well-known and highly respected practice of the Pharisees performing prayers in public using long speeches and with phrases repeated over and over for dramatic effect. They were show offs.

In your study, you also learn that the Lord gave this prayer to his disciples as a model.  Hence it is the "Lord's prayer" because it was the Lord's prayer-teaching in contrast to the prevailing religious practice, yet it is equally the  "Disciple's prayer" because it is the type of prayer they should pray.

In your study, you learn that the prayer is six requests divided into two groups of three.  The first three relate to God and coming kingdom.  The last three relate to daily and simple personal requests, subordinate to God's sovereignty.

In your study, you learn that the references to the kingdom have two parts, that future and final kingdom, but also the kingdom presently existing in the Christ's work on earth now.

And you learn that even in a petition to God in the approved form, it is His will, not ours that we seek.

Prayer is equally if not more our heart's alignment to God's purposes than a request for a lottery win.

In your study, you might look closely at the English text and use some Greek aids to learn that the similar prayer is recorded in Luke 11, with some minor differences.  For example, Matthew uses the Greek word opheilema (debts or something owed) while Luke uses the Greek word hamartia (an offense, missing the mark).

Locate the Bible Topic PRAYER in the Bible Study Outline.

You decide that prayer of the believer should be placed someplace under the Soteriology - Salvation topic. If you scan down the Bible Study Outline you will see a major heading Transformed Living.  Under that you will find Prayer, and then the Lord's prayer as topic Salvation 3375.

It's easy as cake, or the bread of life.

Soteriology means the study of salvation.  In the general sense it is God's work in the restoration of the sinner and a transformed life as a child of God. Thus, given the 7 other places to place your notes on Jesus' instructions on prayer to his disciples, the major topic of salvation (soteriology) seems right.  Of course, if you wanted to study and record information about Jesus' acts in contrast to the Pharisees and as the teacher of the prayer, you would jump to Jesus - Life - Teaching which is Jesus 7670 and also make similar notes there.

Add your own notes and research, or comments under the Bible Topic "PRAYER," which is a subtopic under the BIG heading of "Salvation" into your word processor.  This is just an example of how you would add your comments, your comments will vary, and you can make the format anything you want:

CHARACTERISTICS — PEACE
                       Salvation 3320

CHARACTERISTICS — PERSEVERANCE
                       Salvation 3340

CHARACTERISTICS — PRAYER
                      Salvation 3370

               LORD'S PRAYER
                      Salvation 3375

Historical Setting: Pharisees were well-known and highly respected for "performing" prayers in public using long speeches and with phrases repeated over and over for dramatic effect.

Model Prayer:  The Lord gave this prayer to his disciples as a model.  Hence it is the "Lord's prayer" because it was the Lord's prayer-teaching in contrast to the prevailing religious practice, yet it is equally the  "Disciple's prayer" because it is the type of prayer they should pray.

Structure of Prayer: The prayer is six requests divided into two groups of three.  The first three relate to God and coming kingdom.  The last three relate to daily and simple personal requests, subordinate to God's sovereignty.

Two-fold Kingdom Reference: The references to the kingdom have two parts, that future and final kingdom, but also the kingdom presently existing in the Christ's work on earth now.

Application to my life: Even in a petition to God in the approved form, it is His will, not ours that we seek. Prayer is equally if not more our heart's alignment to God's purposes than a request for a lottery win.

Note on Greek Words: The similar prayer is recorded in Luke 11, with some minor differences.  For example, Matthew uses the Greek word opheilema (debts or something owed) while Luke uses the Greek word hamartia (an offense, missing the mark).

              FOR GOD'S HEARING
                      Salvation 3390

              TRUST IN GOD
                      Salvation 3410

              MERCY
                      Salvation 3440

              DEFENDER
                     Salvation 3460

              JUSTICE
                     Salvation 3480

             BLESSING
                     Salvation 3500

             GOD'S GLORY
                    Salvation 3530

Even in a petition to God in the approved form, it is His will, not ours that we seek. Prayer is equally if not more our heart's alignment to God's purposes than a request for a lottery win. The references in the Lord's prayer in Matthew 6 to the kingdom in two parts, future and final kingdom, also speaks to the goal of prayer as the glory of God.

WOW!  The next time you have a note or research or comment on the Lord's prayer, you will know right where to go, and that's where all of your notes will have been resting in the Lord.

But MOST IMPORTANTLY, when you have other Bible Studies on other prayers, you will add those notes in the Prayer section too.  You will develop a working Bible Study, where scripture unfolds onto other related scripture.
